New Tricks

New Tricks has been my favourite television show since I was a little girl. I love the main quartet of actors and their multi-dimensional, complex, wonderfully British characters. For ten years, it has consistently had the highest viewing figures of almost any BBC drama. Now that its in it's tenth series, inevitably there has to be some changes. Staying in one role for that amount of time, no matter how much you love it, must get tedious. Some people crave change more than others, but to me, ten years still seems like a hell of a long time.

Amanda Redman is the single most perfect actress to play the character of Sandra Pullman. When she leaves the show in episode eight, undeniably some of the original magic will be lost, especially considering the departure of Alun Armstrong, the fantastically loopy Brian, in episode four. However, people who are going to stop watching the show after this are, in my opinion, missing the point entirely.

Personally, I can't say I'm Tamzin Outhwaite's biggest fan, but who knows, she will probably be great. I know that she will never replace Amanda, but she isn't trying to: she is a different actress portraying a different character. At the end of the day, I have faith that the writers will keep up the incredibly high standard of storylines and character development.

One of the things I like the most about New Tricks is how the characters steadily become more fascinating with each passing series. This is because of the brilliant quality of both acting and writing featured on the show. This isn't going to get worse in any way- in fact, with two new characters to explore and develop, it will probably get even better.

So what I really want to say is don't give up on New Tricks just because two of the main characters and actors are leaving. Keep watching it, because it is an original British drama, because it has such a high calibre of acting and writing and because I honestly believe that the old dog has got life in it yet. By all means, if the team dynamic doesn't work, if the plots become boring or if Gerry sells his beloved Triumph Stag, stop watching it, but please just give it a chance first.

Six days in the life of me.

Wednesday, 10th July.

So I've been looking for an app that allowed me to write down my thoughts and what I've been up to daily in a simple format so I can to copy it on to my blog for you, the people of the interwebs, to read. Something like the notes feature on Apple devices, just a bit prettier and with more features. Today I stumbled upon this and got it for free- win! :)

I finally started the work I'd been given from my sixth form induction day today. I decided to start with English Literature as it would probably take the longest to complete. I chose to study the social and political events surrounding the writing of 'The Great Gatsby' by F. Scott Fitzgerald purely because I'd read it fairly recently and I knew that the 'Jazz Age' of 1920s America was an interesting period to study. To be honest, I didn't really like the novel the first time I read it. I thought it was all a bit too metaphorical and vague, until I read 'To The Lighthouse' by Virginia Woolf and realised that Gatsby is like an instruction manual on how to make a sandwich in comparison. Anyway, that took a good few hours and is still not finished. I spent the morning watching last night's Luther. Without wanting to give anything away, that toothbrush thing was disgusting. It put me off my toast.

So that was another day in the life of a hermit...

Thursday, 11th July.

Today was a successful day on the whole. I walked into town (I know, me actually going outside, and walking too!) for Emily and Gemma's birthday presents to take to their joint birthday sleepover-and-takeaway extravaganza, which was organised for this weekend as everyone is going on holiday at various times and it's difficult to find a day where we're all free! When I got back I wrapped the super-cool presents with my awesome present-wrapping skills. I don't know if I've mentioned this before but I am absolutely terrible at wrapping gifts unless they are flat and rectangular, but unfortunately for me I always seem to but the most awkward-shaped thing in the shop!

After that, I decided to do a bit of cleaning for my mum whilst she was at work. I lived to regret this because while I was dusting, I realised that I'd missed a spot. I reached over to dust it, resting my hand on the bloody cactus on the window sill, of all the places. Needless to say, this hurt like a bitch and started a good twenty minutes of me trying to pull tiny little transparent cactus spines out of my hand, worrying that if I left any in they would get infected and the infection would spread around my body and I would face certain death by cactus. I'm fairly certain that there are some of the little buggers still left in my hand but I seem to be okay five days later. I hope.

Friday, 12th July.

Today has been a good day. I went to a little cafe with my auntie and grandma. Until now I had no idea it even existed. It was by a wharf so we sat outside and watched the barges in the sun. The coffee and cake were yummy too! We'll probably go again with my mum who was jealous because we were out enjoying ourselves in the nice weather whilst she was stuck at work. Mwhahaha. I'm now cursing myself for not taking a hipster-ish photo of my coffee, it looked so good!

We stayed there for a couple of hours then I went home and played Candy Crush (why is it so addictive?!) and watched an old episode of Charmed which I was completely obsessed with when I was little. Nothing has changed, I'm still just as obsessed with it now, if not more! A young Zachary Quinto made an appearance in it the other day as a warlock :)

That's about all I've done today, it's been fairly quiet but good quiet. Plus, I think I'm finally getting used to this warm weather! Tomorrow I'm have my hair cut short because I have like millions of split ends and it's just generally annoying me. Fingers crossed it will turn out okay!

Saturday, 13th July. (Actually written on Sunday, 14th July because I have a terrible memory)

So I'm four days into using this app and I've already forgotten to update it. This probably won't make much sense as it was written at 09.15 on a Sunday morning and I'd just woken up. So, Saturday. I got my hair cut to about collarbone length. I think it looks nice but my sister said I look like King Henry I...rude! She only knows what he looks like from Horrible Histories though so hopefully I don't bear any resemblance. I didn't take the obligatory selfie because it was ridiculously warm and I had the skin colour of a tomato.

The thing that distracted me from writing this update was the new novel by Gillian Flynn, 'Gone Girl'. There's lots of hype about it so I thought, I'd give it a read.  I ended up buying it from a charity shop only to find out that my grandma was the one who'd donated it to the shop in the first place and I could have just borrowed it from her. Still, it was only £2 and it's for a good cause. It was definitely worth the money, I'm really enjoying it so far! :) That was about all I did except watch TV, eat and find a cool place to read (as in temperature, but hey, my living room is pretty cool).

Sunday 14th July (The actual one, but written on Tuesday 16th July because I was busy but also to confuse you further :P )

So, the sleepover at Gemma's was very eventful. We played a game on my iPod called 'Heads Up', which is like the game where you write something like a character or celebrity on a post-it note and stick on on someone's forehead, then they have to guess who they are. The game on my iPod also has categories like songs and accents and is great for parties and stuff. The funniest one was when we were doing accents and German came up whilst I was holding the iPod on my head and Gemma was shouting 'NEIN NEIN NEIN' really loudly! Then we had a huge argument about how to pay for the takeaway as some of us only had notes but luckily Sasha saved the day with her amazing Maths skills. I really wanted Emily and Gemma to open their presents just to see their reactions even though their birthdays are a few weeks away. They both loved their presents! We ended up staying awake until like four a.m discussing the meaning of life but I was feeling super-awake and only slept until eight a.m. That, children, is what too many Skittles do to you.

Monday 15th July.

We all got up and got some breakfast (croissants!) then watched the Pokemon DVD I brought. I hadn't watched the film since I was about ten because my Mum threw the video away. I never quite forgave her for that (I mean she threw away Scooby Doo and the Cyber Chase too! The cheek!) but Emily bought me the DVD last year so now I am happy. I felt so nostalgic watching it again, I swear I must have watched it like a million times when I was little. After that we had lunch (noodles!) and played on the Wii. Gemma was decided as the ultimate master tennis player after winning the rest of us multiple times so then we admitted defeat and played Just Dance. I can barely walk without falling over so asking me to co-ordinate my arms and legs at the same time is not something I do very successfully, but I enjoy it all the same. :) After that, I went home, ate more food (chips!), watched more Charmed, read more of Gone Girl and went to sleep.

Tuesday, 16th July.

I was rudely awoken by the extremely loud window cleaner who talks to my Mum for ages when he comes to clean the windows. I was feeling tired from the lack of sleep the night before and I think I could have slept for another hour but I was hungry so I decided to venture downstairs for food. After breakfast, I sat on the sofa and read Gone Girl until I finished it a couple of hours later. I have to say it was the one of the best books I've read, it definitely lives up to the hype. I was disappointed when it ended so suddenly, I was expecting another couple of chapters but it turned out to be stuff related to the novel like playlists and bloody Richard and Judy promoting their book club. SPOILERS FROM HERE TO THE END I really hope there's a sequel where Nick and Boney and Go and the whole of America fucks Amy over good and proper, the bitch. People dislike both Nick and Amy for what they've done, but I think Amy just takes it to another level. I never thought I'd say this about someone, but I genuinely do not blame Nick for having an affair. I think I would do the same if I was married to that psycho.

I was thinking about this earlier- maybe we shouldn't blame people for cheating as much as we do in society. People generally don't just wake up in the morning and think 'hey, I'm going to cheat on my partner today, sounds like fun'...there always has to be a reason, right? I know most of the issues in relationships can be resolved through communication and stuff but maybe we should focus our attention less on the cheater and more on their partner, or just on the relationship as a whole. Back to the book though, it was seriously thought provoking. I literally didn't want to put it down. Even before it was revealed that Nick was cheating and Amy's diaries were fake, I disliked her. I understand why she felt how she did but the things she did to people were inexcusable. I could talk about the book all day but my laptop is getting dangerously warm as I write this and I am in fear of it exploding so maybe I'll do a proper review next time.

I hope you liked the new format to this post, it certainly makes it easier for me to remember what's I've been up to lately! I know this post has been longer than normal too, thanks for sticking with it until the end. :)

Sun, in England?

As I write this, I am sprawled out on my bed in a vest-top and shorts trying to avoid the sweltering heat. But you live in the UK, you say, it's never warm in the UK! Well, this year, for reasons unknown, there has been quite a few seriously warm days. Most people enjoy this weather, but since I am blessed with the skin of a ghost which turns tomato-red after fifteen minutes in the sun, I don't really like it. I do try to make the most of it because it's fairly rare here, especially in rainy Yorkshire, but the only hot day where I've properly ventured out was when my Dad took me to a Medieval Fair at Harewood House in Leeds. I have to admit it was seriously cool. The grounds of the house are beautiful, as you can see below. The people who were putting on the stalls and displays looked really authentic and were super-knowledgeable about Medieval times.

This is one of many pictures from a jousting event which I really enjoyed!
This picture shows a battle recreation with real cannons and everything! I wanted a fake wooden sword but all the kids got to them first, damn it. xD

I'm very pleased to announce that I finished my last exam on the 24th June and have now left school! It's pretty good but I was bored on the first day because I had nothing to do, but I've stocked up on a few boxsets and I've been writing a bit of fic so it hasn't been too bad. :) Anyway, that Friday, it was prom. I have to say that I wasn't overly excited about it as I'm not keen on getting dressed up and my high heels were sooooo painful but it turned out to be a better night than I expected. Everyone had made an effort and the hotel was really nice. I requested that the DJ play my all-time favourite jams, Toxic by Britney Spears and SexyBack by Justin Timberlake. Then he played Mr Brightside :D

Also, a piece of advice- don't attempt to do the Cha Cha Slide in high heels under any circumstances. It does not work and causes extreme pain. ;)

This is the professional photo we had taken. Emily is on the far left, then Sasha, Gemma (weird hand person!), Ella and me.

And one of me looking super-awkward in my dress. Me in an actual dress is a sight you may never see again...

Also, see that sexy chica in the darker blue dress in the group photo? That's Ella and her blog is amazing, have a gander at it here: ellaumbrellax.blogspot.co.uk

That's about all for now, my next post will probably be some TV/film/book reviews as all I'm doing these days is watching TV and reading!

The Wanderer Returns

I must admit, I feel slightly awkward writing this post, sort of like when you meet your great-aunt who you haven't seen since you were five years old. I realise that it's been a few months since I last posted on here because it was starting to feel like a chore. I've almost finished school completely now which on one hand feels like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders but also scares me senseless. Being there for five years means that I'm (almost) completely in my comfort zone, so being the new kid again is making me nervous. Another thing is that my school wasn't exactly the most pressurising of environments (basically I did most of my GCSEs on my own, with the help of CGP revision guides), so moving to a grammar school will be a steep learning curve, literally! On the plus side, though, lots of other people are coming from different schools too and I'm really looking forward to meeting some new faces. Also it is a great excuse to buy lots of new stationery, which is always a bonus! :-)

After my last exam on Monday, I have a 9 week long holiday. I should be glad about this but I've been off school for almost two weeks now and I'm already bored. I've been out with friends and I'm going away for a couple of days at the weekend but I don't have the money to go out everyday. So far, this has given me a good opportunity to do a bit of writing, which I think has suddenly improved for some reason. I'm also thinking of redesigning my blog to keep me occupied. It's been quiet around the house for the past few days as my sister has been away on a residential trip with school, which has been nice, to be honest, but I'm glad she's back now. :)

I will try my best to post soon-ish! Enjoy the sunny weather while it lasts!

Saturday 2 February 2013

Food, films and the future.

Readers: if I ever claim to be busy again, ignore me because it will be nothing compared to this month. I'll start by taking you on a magical mystery tour back to the beginning of January...

It was Ella's birthday on the 10th but we had a two and a quarter hour long English Language exam on the same day. I'm not a believer in revising for English, I don't understand how you can other than past papers to be honest. I went into the exam feeling fairly prepared and the questions weren't bad but I don't have a good feeling about it at all as I struggle to write creatively under pressure. Anyway, Ella opened her presents after the exam which took my mind off it, luckily she liked mine!

The day after to properly celebrate her birthday we went to Red Hot buffet in Leeds, it's basically a huge buffet with food from all over the world- India, China, America, Thailand....They even did desserts too! I tried sushi for the first time so I can actually say that I don't like it, I found that it doesn't really taste of anything to be honest. I can't say I'd eat it again but at least I've tried it! Anyway, the rest of the food was lovely, especially the creme brulee!

After stuffing our faces (we each went back four times for more food) we went back to Ella's to watch some horror films. The first was called Psych 9 and if I could describe it in three words it would be enjoyable but strange. We still didn't understand what had happened even after googling it in the morning! The second film we watched was Case 39 with Renee Zellweger, which I really enjoyed.

Since then I've been revising for the Physics exam which was last Friday, I couldn't believe how easy it seemed! I'm just hoping they don't mark it harshly to compensate...

Probably the most important thing which has happened this month is that I've applied to college! I had my first interview out of three today and I've been offered a place which I'm really happy about, although I'll have to see how the other interviews go before I accept anywhere. My next interview is on the 14th February so fingers crossed it goes well as I can't wait to have a new start, study the subjects I love and be in a class with people who actually want to learn.

In the meantime I have to learn two pages of French for my speaking test and revise basically everything I've ever done in Maths so I can get an A and be allowed to concentrate on other subjects rather than Maths. Tomorrow I'm going to Manchester on the train with Sasha, Ella, Gemma and Emily for a shopping trip which I've been looking forward to for weeks!

Monday 31 December 2012

Goodbye 2012...Hello 2013!

Happy New Year to my lovely readers and Happy Birthday to me! I'm feeling incredibly lucky at the moment because I've got money to spend on a new iPod touch and a prom dress, plus some amazing presents from the girls. I realise I sound spoiled but I've never had this amount of money and cool stuff before so a massive thank you to my family and friends in in order!

There's only 5 hours left of 2012 as I'm writing this, which feels strange as it's all been a bit of a blur. So much has happened this year and I know this sounds cringingly cheesy but I really do feel like I've grown as a person and I've gone on a mini voyage of self-discovery in a way. I haven't had the chance to be as creative as I'd like this year so my new year's resolution is to take some time out for myself, mainly to further my creative writing skills and to stop myself moaning on here that I feel like an exam robot. I know that 2013 will be even more stressful than 2012 in terms of exams but I'm really looking forward to September when I start college/sixth form purely because it's a new start.

Anyway, enough of the deep thinking, yesterday I went to see The Hobbit with Ella, Sasha and Emily for my birthday. I have to say I was a little unsure at first but it got better and better and the riddle scene with Golumn and Bilbo really impressed me, it was the perfect mix of humour and suspense. Afterwards we went to Maccy D's for a catch-up even though we only saw each other a week ago!

I've been thinking how much the BBC has killed me this year...first the Reichenbach Fall then Rory and Amy leaving Doctor Who and then Merlin ending. Seriously.

Also thank you to everyone who has left me birthday messages on Twitter, you are the best! :-)

Saturday 22 December 2012

Forget Christmas...it's my bloggiversary!

Hello all! The 21st was (what I call) my bloggiversary- the one year anniversary of my lovely blog! I've written a grand total of 64 posts and I think all of them have actually been read by at least one real person rather than some kind of spam bot, which is great! Thank you if you are one of those people :-)

Christmas is in under 3 days now, which is pretty scary, this year has been a blur! I'm a bit disappointed with the weather as it's too warm to snow so instead it's been raining non-stop all day and it just doesn't look festive at all. But there's still presents and food so it's all gooood.

Speaking of presents, the girls got me some brilliant stuff including a huge box of Milk Tray, a Deathly Hallows symbol necklace and transferable Dark Mark tattoo, lip crayons, jewellery and a Doctor Who book! It's my birthday on New Year's Eve and we're going to see The Hobbit so I'm looking forward to that (and more presents of course!)

Last weekend I went to York with my mum and auntie (who have decided to have a massive argument just before Christmas and make Christmas dinner extremely awkward) and I got a new Cath Kidston bag, it's so purty! It's dark red with little beige polka dots :-)

I can't think of much else to say except from have a wonderful Christmas and don't hold back on the food and drink!!
